Chapter 1
A face only a mother could love

Peyyton Pinfield lurched the car forward with a screech keeping her eyes steady on the winding black road in front of her. Her knuckles were turning white from gripping the steering wheel so tight. She let out a small grunt and kept an angry scowl on her face. There was no way she was going to let Hailee Birchmen get her way. No way in hell. And letting Hailee see her so upset was only making matters worse. Peyyton closed her eyes for point two seconds and realized that she was driving as she started to swerve.

Not good.

Hailee and Peyyton had never been friends. Not once. Not even in third grade when Peyyton thought the new girl Hailee was super cool they could become BFF's. Hailee had rolled her eyes at Peyyton and pushed her aside stating that she was "Too cool to hang out with girls who had poop brown hair."

So ever since then, Peyyton decided that hanging out with Hailee Birchmen was a no-no. Peyyton had even tried to squeeze lemon juice in her hair to make it blonde when she was in third grade but it had never worked. So in the seventh grade when Mrs. Pinfield finally let Peyyton go one shade lighter, Peyyton rubbed it in Hailee's face that she got her hair dyed before Hailee. Hailee had told her that it was best to go natural and that her roots were showing.

So Peyyton just couldn't win against Hailee, and it had been that way for years. Things weren't slowing down anytime soon either. This time Hailee had convinced Peyyton's boyfriend, Devon, to tutor her in chemistry. Peyyton had scowled at Hailee and said that Devon wasn't interested in something like that. Hailee had looked at Peyyton with her big brown puppy dog eyes and said, "Oh, you don't trust him with me, do you? Aw, it's okay Peyyton! It's just a little tutoring. What's the harm in that?" She then gave Devon a sweet, but devilish, smile and smirked at Peyyton. And not wanting to seem like an over-protective control-freak of a girlfriend, Peyyton smiled back.

Whatever, Peyyton would win one day and Hailee would see how it feels.

Peyyton pulled up to her favorite coffee shop, Hole in the Wall Coffee. She slumped inside the oak doors feeling defeated and took in the smell of coffee beans and lattes. It was a calm place, filled with wooden tables and people playing their guitars and writing poems and song lyrics sipping on their coffee and espressos. Peyyton walked up to the counter where a new girl she didn't recognize, with a face only a mother could love, took her order. Peyyton ordered her usual frozen double chai latte with bananas.

She took a seat by a guy with a shaggy haircut strumming his guitar. He was pretty cute and decided that it wouldn't hurt to talk to a cute guy when she was wallowing in her own self pity. Okay, so she had a boyfriend but he was with little miss perfect and was probably cheating on her as it was.

Seemingly, the thought escaped her mind as she stared at the boy next to her. It's not everyday that she can find a cute guy who can possibly play his guitar for her.

Chapter 2
On Top of Things

Peyyton felt the air rush out her lungs in a silent sigh. There was a soft nervousness trickling through her body at the thought of approaching the boy who was, at the moment, currently slightly strumming his guitar and bobbing his head ever so slightly to an imaginary soundtrack only he could hear. For a moment, as Peyyton found herself gazing at him, he seemed to be detached from the physical realm, like he was in a world all on his own – separate from the ambient atmosphere of HoW Coffee (the local students’ nickname for the popular after-school hangout café, Hole in the Wall).

And, wow. She would admit it. Yes, he was pretty darn cute.

And right now, Pretty Darn Cute Coffee Boy was gazing around him, where sheets of musical notes lay scattered everywhere; on top of the rosewood cushioned chairs, grazing the surface of a matching red-oak table, strewn across the black guitar case at his feet. Finally finding the right sheet in a stack of pristine white paper, which was strangely well-organized despite the chaos around it, PDCCB (let’s shorten it, shall we?) was off and humming again, looking as tranquil as ever.

Peyyton took another steadying breath.

You can do this, Peyyton. You know you can. He’s just a boy in HoW for crying out loud! You can do this. You can totally do this.

Oh God, she couldn’t do this. It wasn’t that she, Peyyton Pinfield, had never approached a cute guy before. Or that she didn’t know how to wield the polished skill of weaving flirtatious lines into a conversation that could be taken to the next level. After all, she was dating Devon White, the star Varsity Football (oh, and let’s not forget baseball and soccer, as well) captain and athlete.

Oh no, it definitely wasn’t her lack of experience or some silly nervousness.

It was slightly more of a shock at realizing the thoughts flowing through her own head. She was experiencing an “I-know-I-have-a-boyfriend-but-strangely-I-don’t-really-care-right-now” feeling, followed by a mildly dawning horror at herself for thinking them; because she definitely hadn’t fought tooth and nail to snare Devon, just to have these dismissing thoughts not 1 month later.

You know what, Peyyton? Just do it and get it over with. Or don’t do it at all. You probably didn’t even have it in you. Hailee was right, you are just an over-jealous girlfriend that can’t even approach another guy, even though you know your own boyfriend is probably cheating on you this very moment. How sad.

Wow, her thoughts were even mocking her.

With that Peyyton screwed up her courage, leaned over slightly, the “hi” practically on the tip of her tongue, and got ready to give one of her signature Peyyton gorgeous smiles – when she was interrupted by a short staccato burst of someone yelling. No, scratch that. Screaming – her name.

Peyyton almost winced as she heard it, the volume much too loud in the small café. “PEYYTON! FROZEN DOUBLE CHAI LATTE WITH BANANAS?” It was less of a question; more as a statement. A loud one.

Awkwardly, Peyyton rose from her chair and went to retrieve her long forgotten drink. Wow, talk about embarrassing. She nodded politely at the café girl, who barely even glanced at her, and went back towards her old seat, too mortified to even check who was witnessing her humiliation.

The moment she sat back down, however, the boy looked up, and locked gazes with Peyyton. His eyes, looking at them head-on, were an almost indescribable color; a vivid navy-emerald, that was like the color of the ocean at its darkest. They held a certain depth, an unexplainable wisdom beyond their years, an endlessness that she could get lost in forever. Those dark mysterious eyes were emphasized slightly with a soft tan complexion and hair that was the color of cool chocolate brown, a perfect mixture of rich hazel and smooth chestnut-brunette. It looked so soft like the sweet flow of velvet moonlight; and seemed to inter-change between light and dark, like silk, under the dainty lighting of the HoW Coffee.

“Hey.” The boy was speaking – actually speaking to Peyyton – his voice musical, as if even his regular words were laced with song. The smile he directed her way made her heart pound with adrenaline, race with anticipation. “Are you always so on top of things?”

Peyyton was silent for a moment, stunned at his noticing. But she was definitely happy, hearing the underline humor and admiration in his tone. Between her and Hailee, it was always a hands-down win in Peyyton’s favor when it came to responsibility. Hailee just simply couldn’t stay on task. She wasn’t on top of anything in her life. Not on top of her classes, or her homework, her job or her chores. It was the one thing in which Hailee failed and Peyyton excelled. Peyyton Pinfield was on top of things.

“Why, thank you. Yes, I normally am. It was how I was raised as a child. Responsibility was always #1 in our household.” Peyyton responded smoothly.

“That’s not what I meant.”

Peyyton looked at him, surprised for a moment at his bluntness and that his face was suddenly very close to hers. Then he laughed, and it was a rich wonderful sound to her ears.

“No. Forgive me, I know you probably are very responsible and on top of things. But I was talking about my music sheets.” He said, traces of the laugh still on his face. “You’re, um, sitting on them.” And he gestured absent-mindedly at her chair, where she really was currently perched on 2 or 3 pages of white paper fast becoming crinkled with each crushing second of her weight.

Peyyton felt the blush creep across her face, lighting up her cheeks with a soft rose-colored tint. “Oh!” She said, and scrambled to her feet, handing back the prized musical score that she was convinced that she’d ruined due to her sitting on them.

But Coffee Boy didn’t seem to notice her embarrassment at all. “Thanks. I’m Brendon, by the way.”

Ooh, what a prefect name. “Cute.”

Brendon looked back into her piercing emerald green eyes, as he gave a slightly shy smirk. “Thank you.”

“I meant your name.” Peyyton said, smiling back.

At that he gave a small laugh. “Thank you again.” God, did he sure look adorably cute when he was embarrassed. “So, do I get to know your name, Cinderella?”

Peyyton just gave him one of her own mysterious yet beautiful smiles. And Brendon, well, he couldn’t help but smile back.

Chapter 3
Glory Moment

Peyyton walked out of HoW Coffee feeling giddy. From the frozen double chai latte (with bananas), or Brendon, she wasn't exactly sure; but most bets laid on Brendon.

Brendon had packed up his things and stuffed his music sheets into his guitar case so that you could see little pieces of coffee stained paper poking out the sides. He carried the large sticker-filled case in his right hand and escorted Peyyton to her own car door opening it in one swift motion with his left.

Now there's a gentelmen!

Peyyton was taken a back at first because she wasn't use to this type of thing. Devon would never do something like that.

Never.

She couldn't remember the last time Devon even held a stupid door open for her.

Sadly, instead she remembered the last time if flew back and hit her directly in the nose.

Well, okay that wasn't something you could call hard-to-forget. The fact that pure evil was standing directly behind her when it happened only made matters worse.

Oh, sorry. Pure evil?

Hailee.

Pure evil arrived at the worst times too. It's not like she ever saw Peyyton in her glory.
And if Peyyton was having a glory moment, which was rare, Hailee would find some way to make sure it wasn't so glorious after all.

Like that time when -

Stop this! Peyyton scolded to herself. She was with Brendon right now. Sweet, wonderful, opens-car-doors-for-you Brendon. This was her glory moment and Hailee wasn't around to ruin it for her! So why did she insist on thinking of Hailee?

Peyyton slid into the plush seats of her BMW and looked up at Brendon noticing a cute freckle directly under his right eye. Under those gorgeous turquoise eyes of his. Those irresistibly delicious ocean-colored eyes.

"Thanks," she said with a smile. He shrugged shyly and smiled back.

He slowly closed the car door for her and she started up the car. She rolled her window down half way and began adjusting her mirrors trying to prolong the time she was spending her glory moment boy.

"Hey Cinderella!" Brendon shouted as she was putting the car into reverse. Peyyton stopped on instinct, instantly, and silently laughed to herself with the cute nickname he had for her. She put the car into park.

"Yeah?"

"Can I uh..." he looked down at his feet and scuffed one Vans shoe against the pavement. "DoyoumindifIgetyournumber?" he said slurring his words together. For a second, Peyyton shot him a confused look but quickly realized what he had said.

It was cute. The way he asked it and all. The "Do you mind" part made her giggle to herself. She never heard a guy asking, Do you mind, for her number. They usually go straight for the "What's your number babe?"

But Brendon was different and by now she was beaming. "I would like that."

Brendon let out a silent sigh of relief feeling triumphant in asking the pretty Peyyton Pinfield for her number. Even better, she agreed to give it to him. He wanted to write a song for her. He wanted it to be perfect, just like she was, in his eyes. He wanted her to fall in love with his voice - but he didn't know that she already had.

So he just met the girl. Big whoop. It's not like she was dating someone else...right? Little did Brendon know, she was. And little did Peyyton know, she forgot to tell him this.

***
As soon as Peyyton stepped into her home, her phone beeped. She got excited for a quick moment thinking that Brendon was texting her. She slid open her LG Chocolate and frowned instantly.

One New Text Message
Devon White

She was tempted to just ignore it but hit open anyways.

Hey babe. Wnna come ovr? Parents rnt home :)

Okay, so she sort of forgot that she had a boyfriend. Gorgeous Devon White that every girl wanted to date. Of all people, he choose Peyyton. Even over Hailee.

Well, maybe.

She instantly wanted to text back a 'No' but decided that she would probably be bored tonight as it was. She needed to get her mind on her own boyfriend, not gorgeous, irresistibly delicious eyes, coffee boy, glory moment, make-Vans-look-hot Brendon.

She looked at the message once more, frowned again, and hit reply.

K, I'll be ovr soon.

She hit send with a groan and told her mom she was going to Devon's.

"Bye honey! Be good! Be home by midnight at least!"

"Okay, mom. I'll probably be home before that," Peyyton said thinking that she would be home way before that. Her mom wasn't very strict at all. She barely had curfews. If Peyyton came home at 3:00 in the morning her mom would tell her to be home earlier next time because she didn't want her waking up her younger brother by walking in so late. She pretty much had no rules.

Notice how she said at least.

Besides, it was Friday and it was only 7:00 right now. She wanted to stay for maybe an hour and that was it.

**
But she was wrong. Devon has some sort of power over you. No matter how much you want to leave, you just can't. She was planning to talk things over with him about Hailee but she never got around to it. She eventually decided that she didn't really care much anymore.

Devon was acting unusually sweet to her. Saying things like; "You are the most beautiful girl in the whole entire world," and "You have the best personality out of anyone I know."

And a boyfriend should say things like this right?
Yeah, well it's not exactly Devon's "style."

It was a nice ego-booster for Peyyton. But his words were more suspicious than genuine.

Peyyton eventually figured out what his "ego-booster" lines were all about once his tounge was half-way down her throat. It was his way of getting her into bed with him.

And in bed they were but Peyyton willed herself not to go all the way with him. Who knew a few nice lines to someone could turn into such a hot make-out session?

Devon pulled her closer into him making all her suspiciousness and stress about Hailee go away. She felt free and released of any Hailee drama. All her doubts about Devon left her and she realized there was no way he could be cheating on her. This was too good.

No way.

She let herself go and let Devon take over and it felt so good to do.
Her pulled her shirt off exposing him to only her bra and underwear. His eyes looked her up and down appreciatively.

His shirt was already off.
Shocker.
He gave her soft kisses along her nick and traced his finger along the edge of her bra sending shivers up and down her spine.

My God he was hot.

She wondered for a moment if it was illegal to be so damn hot.

He slowly moved one hand to the back of her bra and casually undid it, struggle free. It seemed like something he had been doing his whole life. Which honestly, wouldn't surprise her.

Peyyton was so caught up in the moment that she barely realized what he was doing.
His hands moved lower and lower.

Peyyton pushed herself off of him realizing that the saying "Trying to get into your pants" was more of a reality than just a saying at the moment.

"Devon stop!"

"Peyyton, come on."

"No! I won't, Devon! You know that."

"Yeah, you will. I know you want to."

"I don't and I won't." Peyyton kept her arms folded across her now bare chest. She grabbed her bra with one hand and clasped it back on.

"Peyyton, baby! It's the perfect time. The parents aren't even home. We're right here. So why not?"

"God, Devon! Can't you just like respect me on this? I don't want to and that's final."

"You were going to let me. You almost let me." Devon looked at her. A smirk plastered across his face.

"Get that smirk off of your face. I'm out of here. Thanks for the lines."

"They did get you in bed with me," Devon said sheepishly.

Peyyton scoffed at his comment. "You are the biggest jerk I have ever met in my life. Go sleep with Hailee! You two are like a match made in Heaven! You want to sleep with her, don't you?"

"Yeah, every guy wants that! She's soo hot. But Hailee's too easy," Devon laughed.

"You asshole. We're over."

Peyyton gathered her clothes off the floor and quickly put them back on, not once looking at Devon. A beep sounded from her Seven For All Mankind jeans.
She took her cell out.

One New Text Message
Brendon McGrand

Peyyton's anger diminished as she opened the message.

I cnt stop thinking about u. I need 2 c u. Meet me at RootSand Beach?

She didn't hesitate to hit reply either.

I'll b there as soon as I get out of this hell hole.

She hit send, turned, walked out of the room that almost made her loose her dignity with a boy she only lusted after, and out of Devon White's life.

Chapter 4
Who said silence isn't a good thing?

The smooth stone driveway made a tapping noise with Peyyton’s black ballet flats that comforted her down the dark way with trees all around her.
Peyyton was so mad. How could she do this to herself? Letting that man-whore get to her like that. Why would he do that? How did this happen? These thoughts filled Peyyton’s busy mind. All these thoughts started to give her a headache-and for a moment she was on the verge of tears. She immediately re-opened the wonderful text message.
I cnt stop thinking about u
All the bad thoughts that haunted her immediately stopped. Her headache cured itself, and Peyyton jumped up and down.
And for a few long moments that was great-until it was disturbed.
“Who do you think you are?” Devon asked from the front door. His shirt was still off, he was purposely showing off to any car that passed by. Peyyton turned with a bored look on her face. What was the reason she even went out with this slob in the first place?
“Who are you to break up with me?” Peyyton scoffed and started to walk away. But then his strong arm grabbed her. It really hurt but he faced her towards him.
“You think someone could ever be better than me? Is that what you think?” Devon asked with a confused look on his face. Devon’s’ real side became more and more visible to her now. He was such a pig. A pig who thought he was better than everyone else.
Peyyton found all her strength to snap her arm away from him. Devon was so surprised she managed it he just stood there. Waiting for an answer.
“Actually yes.” Peyyton said with a straight face and her chin facing up. Devon took his back.
“Oh yeah? Who is this guy?”
“Yeah-and you don’t know him,” Peyyton tuned and walked away, and Devon did not try to stop her. Happy thoughts re-filled her head.
“Don’t think you can do this to me! You will regret it!” Devon yelled in a scary and strong voice. At first Peyyton was startled by it. But then she thought of Brendon-and how perfect he was.
She then ran to her car and hit the gas petal faster than light. She literally couldn’t wait to see Brendon. The beach was dark and warm. The waves crashing was music to her ears, and the moon was glowing off the dark blue water. Peyyton took a few deep breaths, and slipped off her flips flops.
The sand was damp and cold but felt good on her small feet. It was dead here-Brendan was nowhere to be found. Peyyton just took a sit down on the ground. She just closed her eyes and let it all sink in. She was finally done with Devon-and it felt good. Peyyton always though Devon would be “the one” since the first date. He was just so nice, and so cute. He was perfect. But then after a while of going out he would treat her bad. Just barely paying attention to her. It was a one-way relationship.
A voice interrupted her mind.
“Hey there,” Brendon said sitting next to Peyyton. Brendon’s blond messy hair curled at the ends due to his DC hat.
“Oh hi,” Peyyton said smiling.
“It’s really nice here. At night, when no one is here. It’s like the only time I can really breath. And think.” He shut his eyes for a few seconds then looked back at me. It really hurt to look at his perfect face. His skin was perfect, his eyes were memorizing. There wasn’t one flaw about him.
He was perfect.
“Um, yeah it really is.” He turned to face the water. Peyyton did the same. We both just started at the water. It seemed so perfect. We didn’t talk for a while, but it wasn’t anywhere near awkward. There were no words that needed to be said.
The silence kept going on. And it wasn’t upsetting. Peyyton and Brendon were thinking. Just thinking. For the rest of this gorgeous night, that’s all they did. And that’s all they needed to do, before they both fell for each other, already.

Chapter 5
All Wrong

Peyyton felt really good at school on Monday. She walked in with a confident smile on her face and had decided to not let whatever fight that she and Devon had last night, not to bother her today. Instead, she didn't even think about it. She had so much positive energy that she felt like smiling at everyone she walked by or giving them a big hug. Or maybe even running a marathon to settle herself down a bit. And she hated running. It was amazing how one beautiful boy could make you feel. She was just about walking on air. Her night with Brendon had been so unbelievably incredible under the gazing moonlight upon their faces as they stared deeply into each other's eyes. Those beautiful ocean colored eyes of his. Everything seemed so perfect that night. The waves were steady as they quietly crashed against the shore with the stars above giving them a perfect moment for the perfect kiss. She liked that he wasn't one of those people who had to say something during every silence. She felt so comfortable with him. It was the greatest feeling she's had in a while and she felt like nothing could touch her.
She decided to meet up with her best friend Courtney before first hour so she could tell her all about -
Peyyton stopped dead in her tracks looking ahead at what, or who was standing about ten feet in front of her.
Un-be-liev-able.
Do something she urged herself. But she couldn't, she couldn't even move. She stood there staring unable to process what she was seeing. It was as if all the walls were crashing in on her and the dirty cream colored floors beneath her feet felt as if they were caving in right from underneath her. She tried to steady herself as someone angrily pushed past her, clearly annoyed that she was standing in the middle of the hallway looking dumbfounded.
"Um, move. People do need to get to class," the person angrily shouted at her. Peyyton didn't even notice. It was all a blur. Her positive energy from just about two minutes ago was now disminished to pure negativity. She was seeing things she told herself. There was no way that this was happening. It just didn't seem...right.
She blinked to make it go away but there they were, her best friend Courtney and her so called perfect-boy Brendon, holding hands in the hallway gazing into each others eyes just as Peyyton and Brendon had been doing just the other night. She had it all wrong. But how? How could she be so wrong about him? And he went to their school? Since when? She definitely would have noticed him sooner. He was one of the most gorgeous boys she's ever laid eyes on.
But none of that mattered anymore. The one boy who might be different then all the rest turned out to be the same asshole as the last one...and maybe even worse.
So the whole plan to tell Courtney about him was now a definite no. It was only a matter of time where Courtney would be telling her all about him and she would have to sit there and listen and nod her head trying to agree with her about how amazing Brendon is while Peyyton would slowly be breaking down on the inside. But at the moment, having to even think about talking to Courtney made her sick. When, in reality, Courtney probably had nothing to do about it. Did she even know there was something going on between Peyyton and Brendon? And if she did, would she have gone behind her back and done this? Probably not. Court was just too good of a friend to do something stupid like that. That made Peyyton feel even worse for having trusted Brendon and thinking he was different. Even though she only knew him for a short amount of time. Wow, she thought, this day couldn't have started off any worse.
"Peyyton." Until she heard that. The last person she wanted to talk to right now was Devon. Well, maybe the last. It was a close tie between him, Brendon, Hailee and Courtney. She turned around ready to face whatever the hell he was about to say to her. Had the bell even rang yet? She wasn't too sure but she didn't care if she was late for class right now. It was the least of her problems.
"Oh. Hi Devon." She said bluntly.
He looked at her for a minute and she looked away, annoyed. "You're still hot, you know." That sort of caught her off guard for a second. Okayyy, so what are you supposed to say to that? Instead, she just shrugged. She didn't care if she looked concedited or not. She was pissed. He continued, "Even though you ran off like that. Which was a pretty stupid thing to do."
Peyyton looked bored by this conversation already. "Really? Cause it didn't seem so stupid to me," Peyyton replied.
"Hah! You know you made a mistake. Look at you! Aw, you're like ready to cry. Miss me already babe? Mad at yourself for acting like a silly little girl running away from sex? That's cute Peyyton, real cute."
That just crossed the line right there. Peyyton wasn't pissed anymore, she was fuming. "How dare you talk to me like that. Do you honestly think of me as some silly little girl running away from sex?! Um, definitely not. I do have morals, you know. Lucky for me, I know how to respect those morals. Unlike you. And I'm pretty sure that I've gone far enough with you. You are such a pig. To have me think for one minute that you were sweet and understanding and perfect and whatever the hell else I thought about you, makes me sick," Peyyton let out a small laugh, "Oh and you think I'm ready to cry? Well, maybe. But I would never waste time or tears crying over some dumbass like you. Seriously Devon, get a life. Find some girl who you can actually respect. And while your waiting, I'm sure there's plenty of other whores out there who are just dying to have one night with you. And even once they see who you really are, will probably change their ways. So excuse me for respecting myself and I'm sorry that you can't accept that. Oh, and, I do need to get to class. I'm pretty sure I'm late enough. So have a nice life Devon White." With that, Peyyton gave him one last smile feeling slightly more confident than she had felt a few minutes ago. Now she just had to get over this whole Brendon thing.
"You'll regret this you know! I can so ruin you Peyyton!" Devon called after her.
Peyyton actually laughed out loud at this. She turned back around to face him. "Save the drama, Devon. You sound like a girl, like Hailee or something. And yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to regret this one bit. Thanks for your concern though!" Peyyton felt good now and she sauntered off to her first hour class, which she was pretty sure, she was about 3 minutes late for at this point but it really didn't matter anymore. She did what she needed to do and maybe, just maybe this would help her get through her day.

Nine Crimes "is deeply sorry.:("
Hello Reader! This is the author of 9 Crimes here! I would first like to say that I am so sorry you haven't been able to read any chapters lately, because I was being a selfish person and wasn't writing anything. Tell you the truth, I kinda had writers block. BUT! That doesn't matter now. By the end of the week (Sun.November 16,2009) I PROMISE to have a new never before seen chapter up - heck lets make it TWO new chapters. And I promise they will be long and juicy! Also, I have decided to re-write every chapter to make it better and more interesting. Tune-in, cause I'm back and better than ever!(:
