CHAPTER 2: Taking ChancesAs I was sitting in between Cali and Madison, my heart was racing. I looked around at the vivaciousness of the carnival, and although chaos was surrounding me, taking it all in kind of calmed me down. I looked all around, hoping to catch his eye. Once he looked up with his dark, deep, and beautiful brown eyes I realized something special in his gaze. It was the kind of look that sends chills through your body, but not the same kind of chills you get when you bite into a snow cone. I was watching him now; Chase was with a friend, now 8 feet away and growing closer.
Anxiety rushed through me, and I’m never shy, so clearly something was making me feel this way. Yet, something inside of me still pushed words out of my mouth.
“Hey Chase!” Oh wow, I hope I didn’t sound too excited. But, I probably did. I probably sounded like a 5 year old meeting Cinderella at Disney World. He looked up at me and smiled as his friend did too, but he was clearly confused and had no idea who we were.
“Hey Skyler, how are you?” replied Chase.
He was wearing a brown Hurley hat like he did in at camp and it brought some memories back to my mind. After the regular greetings, we really started to bond and connect.
“Really good, but I’m so sad school starts in a few days!”
“Trust me, I know what you mean. Why don’t we make it last?” Chase said with a charming smirk.
Ah, too bad he had a girlfriend Brianna, who also worked at camp. Cali, Madison, Tony(Chase’s friend), Chase, & I were having a great time getting to know each other with such an exciting environment around us. But, when we were together and talking I didn’t hear the screams from the rides, the booth employees announcing the winners, or the chiming of the song playing on the carousel. Everything just stopped, and nothing else seemed to matter.
Unfortunately, we had a brief interruption when Tony urged Chase to go with him for a few minutes, and I just crossed my fingers that time would pass by quickly.
“Hold on, Tony wants me to go with him somewhere, but what’s your number? I’ll call you when we come back.”
Oh my God. I was so excited to be exchanging numbers without them first being written on a popsicle stick. That was so cliché and I didn’t want any reminders of Jack.
I gave him my number in hopes that he wouldn’t blow me off later that night, and also I secretly wished my number would get more use than just one phone call on one night.
I knew it was impossible to jump to the conclusion that maybe, just maybe he had a crush on me too. But, doesn't exchanging numbers mean something?

8:15. I checked the time on my phone twice every minute since he left. He left at 8:10 and I’m already missing him. He's so sweet, fun, nice, and cute! He's perfect, and I was obsessing. Is it possible to even be more pathetic than me at this moment? I needed something to take my mind off of him. I checked my pocket for any loose change and had just the right amount to buy the heavenly looking pink cotton candy. I bought the biggest size, so I could share with Madison and Cali. I just hoped they weren’t too hungry, because the longer this lasted; the more I was distracted from whipping out my phone to check the time again.
“So Sky…what’s on your mind?” asked Cali in a playful tone. She loved bringing love to people- and she could always sense connections.
“Hmm, the fact that Chase is really cute and I just wish he didn’t have a girlfriend!”
“Well, he seemed pretty into you, and I have a feeling that fate will bring you two together.” I crossed my fingers behind my back, hoping so much that Cali’s predictions were clear.
“Yes! Sky, I really like him for you! He’s definitely interested and if you’re meant to be you’ll be together someday!”
Ugh, someday was too far away. I can’t wait five minutes after just spending a few hours with him! Would it take seconds, minutes, weeks, months, years, or decades for fate to bring us together?
I tried so hard not to even touch my phone, but once the cotton candy was eaten I couldn’t resist. Time: 8:17. As soon as I saw the time, my phone started to vibrate.
“OH MY GOD IT’S HIM!” I yelped.
“Hey Skyler, I’m sorry about that. Where are you? I’ll be right there.”
“We’re right on the curb again, but we were just about to walk around.” I replied.
“Don’t go to far or I won’t be able to find you!” he joked.
“I’ll try not to get lost, but just for you.” I was surprised by my confidence when flirting with him. Is it illegal to have done this because he has a girlfriend?
“Haha, alright. See you soon.” He hung up, and I was filled with relief, and excitement.
“Let’s walk around some more while we wait for Chase,” I suggested. The three of us threw away the paper stick from our treat, stood up, and began to make a never-ending journey through the carnival.
But, there he was, after only taking two steps, and I was surprised to see he was alone. We had him all to ourselves, and I definitely planned on taking advantage of that.

After two amazing hours of pure joy, and unsuccessful trying to force him on the double-shot ride, it was already time to say goodbye.
“Bye Madison and Cali, it was nice to meet you.”
“You too! It was fun,” responded my two friends in unison.
“And, goodbye Skyler. Let me know if you’re planning on coming here again tomorrow.” I looked into his eyes, thinking I'd see the reflection of the bright ferris wheel, but instead all I could see was our future, and all I could feel was love. He inched forward and leaned in for a friendly hug. To me, it was more than just friendly, it felt like I somehow just molded into his comfortable grip and could stay there forever. Although at a Carnival I could get tingles of excitement before a ride, I just felt my entire body go numb with tingles from my new crush. But, after all- on this night he was my greatest ride.
Chapter 3: Fantasy Becomes Reality
We all packed into my mom’s Subaru again, and I felt even more embarrassed by her poor choice in vehicles this time. We were off, leaving the carnival to be nothing but memories. I flipped open the mirror and stared at my reflection. As I swiped my chocolate brown side bangs away from my eyes, I saw a glimmer, a special sparkle in my sapphire colored eyes. It took me a moment to realize that I had that same look in my eyes that Chase did, and suddenly my heart-shaped lips spread into a smile. I suddenly had hope that this was a sign of that “special connection” Cali witnessed between us.
I looked at the clock above my Mom’s radio and it read 11:11. I closed my eyes, pursed my lips, and wished. As I wished, I was imagined it coming true. Being with Chase forever was just a fantasy, but in this moment I didn’t care how unrealistic my thoughts might be. When I drifted into this dream world of mine, time suddenly accelerated and I was now in the garage of my house, whoa that was fast. I threw off my beat up flip flops, and immediately logged onto facebook to only see that I had no notifications. As I was about to log off, I heard that alert that sounds like a bubble popping, and my heart stopped. An instant message sent by the one and only Chase Moretti- OH. MY. GOD.
Chase: Hey
Skyler: Hey whats up
Chase: chillen, you?
My fingers paused as I hesitated what to say next, but I knew now was not the right time to be shy.
Skyler: Nothing just got home. Tonight was really fun :) .
Chase: Yeah it was. I had a good time with you and your friends.
Ah! He had a good time with me? Did he really just say that or was I still stuck in my own little la-la land of make believe love between Chase and I?
Skyler: Haha, yeah well maybe I’ll see you again before school starts?
Chase: How about tomorrow? You should come back to the carnival tomorrow night.
This wasn’t a dream, or my own fictional love story…this was real, and he wanted to see me tomorrow!
Skyler: Okay! I’ll talk to Madison and Cali and hopefully see you there.
Chase: Alright sounds good. I’m gonna go to sleep but I’ll text you tomorrow.
Skyler: Night Chase, talk to you tomorrow :).
Chase: Goodnight Skyler, yes you will.
Chase signed off at 12:21 A.M.
My heart literally was pumping so hard that it felt like a boxer was using it as a punching bag, but there was no pain, just adrenaline. I couldn’t suspect he was flirting with me, because he was always a natural flirt, which made it difficult to tell if he meant it. My head was spinning, and I knew I had to stop the tangle of thoughts and worries in my brain. “He has a girlfriend, we’re just friends.” I kept telling myself in a weary tone. I had to get a negative outlook in my head to avoid being disappointed. In reality, nothing more than this conversation would probably ever spark between us. But, in my fantasy world nothing could stop him from loving me.
I decided to stop myself from thinking any further by going to sleep. As I laid under the sheets, I once again drifted into my dream world, and no way was I planning on waking up.
