Timber High ............................By: Danielle
Chapter Three is up sorry it took so long!

Timber High

Janice starts freshman year at Timberland High School without her best friend Amie by her side. She has lived in the same place all her life watching friends come and go. When Neil finally tells Janice how he feels, he is forced to move to a different state. How can she survive?
This typical teenage story tells all the hard spots of high school, getting in, getting through, and getting out

Chapter 1

Ok, so I’m definitely your average high school freshman. I honestly have no idea what to expect. I mean, my best friend, Amie, moved last week, things haven’t been all too easy. Starting high school knowing almost no one is a sad situation. I’ve lived in one place all my life, here, Florida. Watching my friends come and go.
“Hi Janice”, yelled Mary a crossed the hall. She ran over to me like I was popular and she wanted to be my friend, but I’d never be..
“You want to hang out after school today?” she asked.
“Um, sure,” I replied. I kind of walked away thinking, wow, high school might be fun. Being tall, people mistake my age a lot, meaning that I could pass for 16. Even though I’m only 14. In my homeroom class we did a long introduction.
“Hi, I’m Janice Witherspoon, I’m 14, I enjoy sports, and I’m good at making new friends.” That’s all I could get myself to say. When Mary’s turn came, I listened closely.
“I’m Mary Eleen Frost and I just moved here from Florida. I like dancing and playing at the beach. I am 14.” Then she sat down. Everyone else was boring, except Neil. He is 15, likes skateboarding and he’s lived here is whole life. I thought he was cute. He has dark blonde, wavy hair and he was about five feet seven inches tall. I have brown hair to my shoulders; I’m 5ft. 6in. and very slim. Mary leaned over and whispered to me,
“I think I’m going to like it here.” I smiled at her, I was happy. At lunch I somehow managed to find a seat next to Mary. I figured since she was pretty much the only person I knew, I could sit there.
“Hi Mary, is this seat open?” I asked.
“Yeah, come sit down.” Mary was pretty nice. She was a little bit shorter than me with blonde hair and shiny green eyes. She had fair, pale skin, not tanned. Which I thought was weird since she lived next to the beach and said she hung out there a lot.
“What do you want to do when you come over tonight?”

“Well, first I have to ask if I can come over, you know.”
She said “yeah.” The lunch bell rang just then and the cafeteria went wild with excitement and movement. I pushed my way through the crowd and got out into the hall. There was hardly anytime to even get to my locker. I had to hurry if I wanted to get to English class on time. That’s been my favorite class since fifth grade. I love to write and read. I carry a notebook and pens with me wherever I go. Ok, I made it! I just got in a seat right as the bell for fourth period rang. But little did I notice until after the bell rang that I was right next to Neil.
“Class, pay attention, we need to work on our first assignment.” That’s what Ms.Blair said, my ninth grade English teacher. She had an odd accent, I couldn’t tell where she was from. Then before I knew it she hollowed my name.
“Janice Witherspoon, come to the front.” I walked up to her slowly, not knowing what I was in for.
“I heard over summer that you attended ‘S. Johnson Camp of WR’. I’m truly honored to have you in my class.” I didn’t know what to say so I shook my head yes and went back so my seat. Why was that such a big deal, I thought. No sooner did I sit down, Neil leaned over and whispered,
“So I guess you’re the best writer in the class”

“I don’t think so”
, that’s all I could get myself to say. Ms.Blair read some rules to us and told us to copy the work assignments down. I wasn’t even done writing them when the bell rang to switch classes. I grabbed my books and bag and headed for the door.
“Janice, later in the year bring us some of your writing”, Ms. Blair said as I made my way to the door. Again, I shook my head yes and walked off.

Chapter 2

On my way home, I kept thinking about which pieces of writing to bring back to class, and I finally decided on the entire notebook. I hurried up the steps of my porch and flung open the door eager to get in. As soon as my mom heard me she hollered down the stairs at me.
“How was the first day?”
“Great”
, I replied. Gosh, I got so caught up in telling you about my first day I forgot to tell you about me. You already know I’m fourteen. I’m five feet and six inches tall with short curly brown hair and bright shinny blue eyes. I’m thin and curvy, not very tan, but not at all pale. “Janice, phone”, my mom hollered from the top of the stairs. I ran up the stairs and took the phone from my mom. “Hello?” I spoke into the phone, not even knowing who it was.
“Janice, it’s Mary, can you come over?”
“Hang on, I’ll ask.”
“Mom can I go over to Mary’s house for a while?”
“Ok, just be back before dinner time.”
“Hey, Mary, I’ll be right over.” I hung up the phone and ran outside into the warm afternoon. I opened the garage door, jumped on my bike, and rode down the driveway. Around two corners and down a long narrow street, I finally got o Mary’s house. Mary was sitting on the steps of her porch. I parked my bike and went up to her.
“Hey Mary, sorry I took me so long.”
“That’s ok, come in.”
Mary led me into her house and into her bedroom.
“Wow, this is so cool”, I blurted out.
“Thanks, we spent the first 3 weeks we moved in working on it. It used to look horrible.”Mary exclaimed. Her room was a dusty gold color, like the very last bit of a sunset. The trim of her two windows and around her door was a light, sky blue. She had her bed against the wall with a greenish-brownish quilt on it. In the corner opposite her walk-in closet was a little desk with colored stationary laid out and a bottle of pens on the edge. Everything was so organized and precise. Like a fairytale in reality.
“So what do you want to do?”

“Well, what is there do to, I don’t know."

“I have play station 2 down the hall, a TV, bikes, what do you like to do?”

“Oh anything Mary.”

“Ok then, how about a game of PS2?”

“Sure.”

So Mary led me out of her room, down the hall way and into a little room with a TV and a couch. We played that silly racing game until I had to go home. I said goodbye and rode my bike home. As soon as I finished dinner I excused myself and went up to my room. I should tell you what it looks like. Its light blue with white trim and posters are hung everywhere. My bed has white and blue, never made sheets. My desk is near my tiny closet and I have a boom box on my shelf with a few books in the corner. Not at all like Mary’s room, but it satisfied me well.

Chapter 3
Burr, I woke up wrapped in two heavy blankets. It’s freezing outside, I could tell. But that means The Winter Formal is almost here. It is four and a half weeks before Christmas break. November 24th, a Friday night. “Janice hurry up, the bus will be here soon.” Ug, I really didn’t want to go to school but if I didn’t then Neil couldn’t ask me to the dance. So I threw on my old jeans and my favorite shirt, tied my shoes and went downstairs. “No time for breakfast, bye!” I called to my mom, and I walked out the door to the bus that just pulled up. The driver opened the doors and I got in. The first thing I noticed was Neil was sitting in my seat, my assigned seat. I walked over to my seat and sat down. “You know this is my seat.” I told him. “Yeah, its mine too.” He said back. I turned my head away and drifted into LaLa Land. Neil, so popular, sitting next to me, so not popular. Why? I asked myself, ‘why next to me?’ “Are you going to formal?” He asked. “Not unless I have a date, which I don’t and never do,” I replied. “Do you want me to pick you up?” “You want me to go with you?” “Yes.” He said. “Um, yeah ok.” “Cool.” “Why me?” “You’re different, not mega cool but you aren’t uncool, you don’t care what people think of you. I have always been popular, not for me, but the way I look. And I wish I could just be average for once.” “So you want to go with me to make you seem average?” “That’s part of it.” “what’s the other part of it?” “I like you, a lot”. Just then the bus lurked to a stop and the driver yelled, “We’re here get off!” I hurried myself out of the bus and into the school to homeroom. I sat down in my regular seat and took out my notebook and pens. English Class is my favorite class, but sadly I have math for homeroom. At least Neil is in this class too. I mean, he sits right next to me everyday. Neil sat down and spoke again. “What’s your half?” “Half of what?” “Well, about you.” “Ok, I’ve lived here all my life, a lot of friends, no boyfriend, and for once I actually got asked to a school dance.” “Wow, well I’ve been in your class since pre-k. “I know, but it wasn’t until 8th grade you got popular, we used to be good friends. “Yeah, then my good looks got me going, it’s not as fun as it sounds though.” “What’s not fun about it?” “They like me not for who I am but how I look. I wish looks didn’t matter so much to people.” When he said that I began to see the old Neil, the Neil I really knew. “I’m glad you’re back to yourself somewhat.” He smiled back at me, I felt like when I said that, I made his day just a tad better. Finally school was done for the day! I got off the bus, and Neil did too. He never got off at my stop. He always waited until the next one. “Hey wait up!” He called to me. I turned around and looked at him. “I need to talk to you”, he said. “We talked in class”, I answered. “But not about what I need to tell you.” “Ok then talk.” “After Winter Formal , we’re moving.” I kept looking at him, and then I turned toward my house and continued to walk. He grabbed my arm, “Janice stop! I know it’s… I cut him off and began talking real fast. “You know, we have been though it all and the time you tell me how you feel you break the news about moving?! I’ve felt like this about you for as long as I can remember. It used to bug me that you only liked me as a friend. Every time you had a girlfriend, I purposely ignored you. So I walked away from you, and tried to forget.” After I said that he looked at me, he took his hand off my arm and said “I thought you only wanted to be friends. I tried to get other girls to like me hoping you would get jealous and like me back.” I really didn’t know what to say after that. “Well it worked Neil, I was jealous. A lot.” “I know that now. I just wish I told you how I felt a long time ago. Now we only have a few weeks.” I wrapped my arms around his neck, his hands on my waist. We hugged each other and it felt special, like it was meant to be. “I better get home now” I said. “Ok, see you tomorrow.” I walked away toward my house, smiling. I was so happy for once. I was in love.
